Course Descriptions

Electronics and Audio Intercepts (TS-010)

 NATIA Certified Technical Investigator Program Part One

This course provides electronics and audio training to help investigators effectively operate in a technological law enforcement environment.  NIA instructors employ lectures, “hands on” electronics labs and practical exercises to achieve the technical learning objectives. Students use basic electronics test equipment such as multi-meters, power supplies, signal generators, cabling tools, test instruments, and circuit and system simulation. A training manual, resource materials and handouts are all a part of this training program. NIA administers an exam and awards a certificate for the successful completion of this course. TS-010, in conjunction with the Basic Video Surveillance Operations TS-020 (Part Two), provides the necessary technical knowledge to test for the NATIA Certified Technical Investigators Certification. For those applying for NATIA Certification, a NATIA representative will administer the exam following the completion of both blocks of training. This 40 hr course meets daily from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

Video Surveillance Operations (TS-020)
NATIA Certified Technical Investigator Program Part Two

This is the second course offering in the National Technical Investigators Association (NATIA) “Certified Technical Investigator” program. Upon completing Electronics and Audio Intercepts (Part One), students attending this course will further develop law enforcement technical skills while designing video surveillance systems for a variety of simulated situations. The emphasis is on practical exercises implementing true “hands-on” applications. Students will become skilled at video surveillance techniques by implementing hardwired video installations, RF installations and rapid installations of audio/video surveillance of vehicles. Students will be required to complete and pass a comprehensive 50-question test, certifying successful completion of this training course, by the NIA.  For those applying for NATIA Certification, a NATIA representative will administer the exam following the completion of TS-010 and TS-020. This 40 hr course meets daily from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

Technical Surveillance for Investigators  (TS-015)
This course teaches investigators how to gather the intelligence and evidence needed for criminal prosecution through the use of covert electronic surveillance methods and technology.  The course uses a combination of classroom lecture and hands on application to build on the student’s knowledge and skills in technical surveillance.  Participants will work with a technical investigators tool kit, digital multimeter, high resolution board camera, microphone, power pack and video cables. Students will fabricate a covert video concealment device, deploy it, and produce an evidentiary digital copy. Participants will also receive detailed training on portable equipment modules and professionally engineered concealments.  This 40 hr course meets daily from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

Law Enforcement Surveillance Tracking (TS-040)

This course is designed for experienced or newly appointed investigators to improve their skills and knowledge for successful surveillance and tracking operations.  This course will address the concepts of foot surveillance, vehicle surveillance and the most advanced technology for tracking. Numerous "hands-on" practical exercises provide the students with the pragmatic application and use of electronic tracking systems in different environments and conditions as well as officer safety and cover team operations.  Traditional operations and new technologies will be integrated to enhance the student's ability to apply the various methods of surveillance to specific operational requirements.  This 40 hr course meets daily from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Criminal Surveillance Tactics (TS-045)

Designed for Detectives, Investigators and Agents of all levels of experience, this course will improve skills and knowledge for successful surveillance of felony suspects. This 5-day, 40-hour course of instruction will develop and enhance attendee performance of physical surveillance to include various forms of mobile surveillance operations and tactics through classroom instruction and practical field exercises. Methods, planning, and execution of surveillance tactics will be discussed, demonstrated, and exercised in detail:

 

· Vehicle and foot surveillance

· Overview of Vehicle Containment Technique

· Effective use of equipment and personnel

· Use of surveillance platform

· Terminology

· Appearance and Mannerisms

· Overview of electronic tracking devices

Advanced A/V Concealments Techniques (TS-070)

This outstanding course is designed to challenge the imagination and creativity of the student.  Upon completing an assessment of audio, video and basic electronics, students will be presented with unique events Technical Surveillance personnel face during the course of their careers. Training scenarios include an undercover environment requiring the student to use all the skills acquired during the week. This advanced training is designed to draw together all the past training and experience and provide new skill sets through realistic scenarios.  Students will be challenged with covert hotel room installations, covert body-worn audio/video concealments, vehicle audio/video installations, hostile outdoor video concealments and microwave linking. This 40 hour course meets daily from 9:00am – 5:00pm.


Surveillance Platform Technology (TS-072)

A unique “how to” platform training course designed for experienced or recently assigned Investigators, Technical Agents and Supervisors.  This course is also for those seeking initial or refresher platform operations training, where each graduate is prepared to become a qualified operator.  Students will review mission requirements, preliminary troubleshooting, evidence recording and case reporting.  This 24 hour course meets daily from 9:00am – 5:00pm.

Covert Neutralization of Locking Devices (TC-010)
International Association of Surreptitious Entry Specialists (IASES) Certification Program Part One

Students receive comprehensive “Hands On” experience with the preliminary skills necessary to defeat basic locking devices in support of authorized overt and covert entry operations.  Students will learn to covertly defeat many of the basic locking mechanisms they may encounter to include warded locks, wafer locks, pin and tumbler locks etc. Many principles of this course can be applied to conduct internal physical security examinations and evaluations of their respective departments or agencies.  NIA Tuition provides the student with a set of specialty tools required to neutralize various locking devices. Designated tools become the property of the student upon successful completion of this course. This 40 hour course meets daily from 9:00am – 5:00pm.

Advanced Covert Neutralization of Locking Devices (TC-020)

International Association of Surreptitious Entry Specialists (IASES) Certification Program Part Two Students are taken beyond the basic fundamentals of locking device neutralization and are exposed to more complex neutralization scenarios and techniques such as codebooks, code machines, tubular locks, high security locks and decoding master key systems.   Included in the tuition are specialty tools which become the property of the student upon successful completion of this course.  A course manual and up to date resource material are part of this curriculum.  Graduates of this course are able to defeat the higher security locking devices available today.  This 40 hour course meets daily from 9:00am – 5:00pm. 

Master Covert Neutralization of Locking Devices I (TC-100)

International Association of Surreptitious Entry Specialists (IASES) Certification Program Part Three

In this course students expand their knowledge of locks and locking devices with updated methods of lock bypass and decoding.  Students learn methods for covert safe and container entry.  Students will also learn mechanical safe lock nomenclature, operations, and combination changing.   Alarm system operations and bypass techniques as well as electric systems (card readers, key fob, key pads etc.) are introduced. The student will also experience “Hands On” decoding of master key systems and master key making.  Since covert entry is the primary objective of this course, the latest innovative tools of enhanced covert entry are taught.  Included in the tuition are a Dial Micrometer and a set of Universal Plug Followers.  A comprehensive course manual and up to date resource material are part of this curriculum. This 40 hour course meets daily from 9:00am – 5:00pm.

Master Covert Neutralization of Locking Devices II (TC-200)

International Association of Surreptitious Entry Specialists (IASES) Certification Program Part Four

This course is a continuation of the previous three classes (Basic, Advanced & Master I) with more emphasis on the higher security locking devices.   The newest High Security Locking Devices will be covered and how to defeat these lock mechanisms.  Students will learn and exercise safe and container entry by drilling techniques.  Students will learn electronic safe lock nomenclature, operations, and combination changing.  The lock manufacturers are constantly coming up with new devices to combat bypass and covert entry and it is imperative to stay up with the new devices and techniques to defeat them.  There are new bypass tools and techniques to defeat these devices and these tools are available to the covert entry specialist.  A comprehensive course manual and up to date resource material are part of this curriculum. This 40 hour course meets daily from 9:00am – 5:00pm.

Master Covert Neutralization of Locking Devices III (TC-300)

International Association of Surreptitious Entry Specialists (IASES) Recurring Certification Training

This course is a continuation of the four previous classes (Basic, Advanced, Master I & Master II).  Students will study various locking devices and the changes introduced making surreptitious entry more difficult.  Students will learn and demonstrate new methods to defeat these locking devices. This course will introduce new material and also refresh the covert entry specialist’s skills in both mechanical and electronic locking devices.  Recommend the entry specialist take this course every 2-3 years to maintain proficiency in an ever changing field.  Students should bring tools that were issued to them in the prior class.  This 40 hour course meets daily from 9:00am – 5:00pm

Interviews, Interrogation and Deception Detection (IS-020)

Cornerstones of police work are interviewing and interrogation and knowing if someone is being deceptive in their responses.  Interviews, Interrogation and Deception Detection is a unique and specialized course designed to help officers conduct better interviews of suspects and witnesses and further investigations ranging from roadside stops, murder investigations, or homeland security issues. This class is also paramount in helping the initial responder and interviewer in determining threat assessment for officer safety.  Star topics of this class include deception detection through evaluating a subject’s attitude, verbal behavior, paralinguistic behavior, and nonverbal behavior.  Just some of these tools of interview and interrogation are demonstrated through the use of the Facial Action Coding System as developed by Paul Ekman and Erika L. Rosenberg; the Reid Technique as developed by John E. Reid; and an introduction into statement analysis using the “SCAN” technique as developed by Avinoam Sapir.  The course concludes with a practical exercise where students demonstrate all of the techniques learned.  This 40 hour block of instruction is jam packed with tools to help any officer who comes into contact with someone giving information and helps that officer place a value on that information.  The course meets daily from 9:00am – 5:00pm.

Advanced Undercover Operations (IS-050)

This excellent course is designed for both newly assigned and veteran undercover officers.  Participants will briefly review the fundamentals of undercover work and move into advanced techniques throughout the week.  Participants will integrate audio and video surveillance into many role-play scenarios demonstrating advanced skills.  Additionally, this program of instruction will focus on operations planning, developing undercover background, handling confidential informants, court testimony, and officer survival measures. This 32 hour course meets daily from 9:00 – 5:00pm.

Terrorism and Homeland Security (MS-015)

This course provides the student with an understanding of the origins of terrorism in the 21th Century and the evolution of modern terrorism. An overview of major terrorist groups, their organizational structure, composition, tactics, and purpose are discussed in seminars.  Case studies involve Islamic recruitment, financial support for international terrorism, eco-terrorism, recent terrorist activities in the US, US citizens turned terrorist and law enforcement countermeasures.  Students will understand the structure of international terrorist organizations (Al Qaeda, the Taliban & Jihadist) their support apparatus, and the potential for radical Islamic terrorist acts in American cities.  Intelligence collection and emergency planning processes are discussed.  Case studies will assist the student in understanding their role and contribution in the War on Terrorism. This class is tailored for emergency responders, law enforcement and military personnel charged with protecting citizens at home and/or abroad from destructive acts of terrorism. The course format is seminar with some lecture and case study discussion. This 40-hr course meets daily from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
